Should Templestowe football club be advertising alcohol?

I read this article where in France and now New Zealand they appear to be trying to break the connection between sport and the promotion of alcohol to our youth with local advertising. I decided to check the Templestowe Football club site to see if one of their main sponsors was an alcohol related company.

https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport/a/25800240/new-zealand-mulls-alcohol-sponsorship-ban/

Yep. Right there on the main page for their site the second advertiser you see is a beer company.

www.templestowefc.com

I've not been actively involved in cricket or football clubs, but from those I've spoken to over the years there does appear to be strong association between alcohol and sport. Drinking after the game and high level players going on to own pubs/hotels.

However it feels like this is a very indirect approach. Surely drinks after matches (if they occur) would be reinforcing the association far more than the advertising which seems to be largely ignored by most people. I'm sure the label in a person's hand is far more likely to be noticed than the ad on a site or around the ground which wouldn't even be noticed by most people.

It's easy to ban the advertising. I wonder what would happen if there was a no alcohol policy on the grounds of all council owned sporting venues. People still want to play sport and if it is important to those who participate in the sport, then perhaps it's time for those people to be proactive in looking after the interests of the next generation.

Next time I'm talking to my friends from the sporting clubs I'll ask a few more questions and see what is really happening in the local sporting groups.

Petition to remove bus lanes on Fitzsimons Lane and Williamsons Lane Templestowe during peek times.

I noticed this petition online and thought I'd share. It is good to see how others feel. It would also be good to hear from people who feel the roadworks have improved or degraded their experience on this section of the road.

Alter bus lanes on Fitzsimons Lane, Templestowe during peak hours to reduce traffic congestion... read more

The Liberal Party at the last election promised traffic lights would be installed at Fitzsimons Lane/Williamsons Road intersection. It could be said they've met their promise but traffic flow management lights and traffic lights are not the same. If feels to me like the entire upgrade was to cater for the 13% of people who use public transport and not for the benefit of the entire community.

I now avoid the intersection at busy times. I don't go north in the morning if I have to come back from Eltham to Templestowe as it adds 20 minutes to travel time. In normal use during off peak periods I've not noticed a significant difference. People turning left from Porter Street heading north to Eltham often don't give way to people on the roundabout and treat that section as a slip lane making it very dangerous for this who are then going into the Shell service station. The footpath on the east of Fitzsimons Lane is an improvement. There old footpath should be joined in so it is useful. It would be a waste to remove it. I see value in the pedestrian lights but haven't used them yet. There is no north/south safe crossing facility for Porter Street which could have been possible with traffic lights. The traffic heading north still appears to be banked up in the night peak as it was before the upgrade but that just an impression. I've not had enough experience on the section of road during peak time to make a good observation.

I think the mistake the government is making is only considering their own facilities such as public transport and not placing and equal emphasis on the benefit for the entire community.

Willamsons Road, Fitzsimons Lane, Templestowe roundabout upgrade. Will it have been worth the $5.8 million?

When I think about going to Greensborough from Templestowe I shudder. Getting to Greensborough is OK, but coming back means facing a queue which can add 10-20 minutes travel time to a six to seven minute drive.

When I look at the roadworks I can't help feel what if anything it will achieve. Once the roadworks are complete there will be lanes for buses which move around 13% of the population, but what about the other 87%.

Had VicRoads designed the changes for the benefit of everyone and not just the Victorian Government's own transport network we may have seen improvement for everyone. But as it is, and I hope I'm wrong, I really can't see much advantage for the majority of road users.

In fact buses heading east on Porter Street will now have a priority light enabling them to cross Williamsons Road. That can only mean an additional delay for drivers. The second concern is the new pedestrian crossing south of the roundabout. Yes it is needed to provide a safe means for people to cross Williamsons Road, but what happens when the south-bound traffic is held up as someone crosses at the pedestrian crossing. Will the traffic management lights stop vehicles entering the intersection or will we see the roundabout blocked just as we did when the pedestrian lights were used on the north side of the roundabout.

There will be new traffic management lights which hopefully will improve the flow of traffic, but my feeling is, had the government just put traffic lights in and made the changes for all road users and not just for their own bus network, everyone would have benefited.

I hope I'm wrong. Only time will tell if the $5.8 million was well spent and whether it improves the traffic flow. What we need to do is to remember what it was like before the roadworks started. Will the night bank up be as bad as it was before the roadworks. Will trying to exit Hawtin Street to turn right at the roundabout to go to Eltham be the same as before. Will those exiting Hawtin Street to go south on Williamsons Road (since the Foote Street exit for Hawtin Street was restricted) now have a better run. Will picking up something quickly from the Templestowe shops and returning across Williamsons Road still be next to impossible. Somehow I'm not very hopeful. I should say I am hopeful, but not very confident.

Are local businesses ripping us off?

Last night I was in the city and stopped by a Thai Restaurant for a bite to eat. We ordered a Massaman curry and a Nasi seafood. Both dishes we'd order locally. The restaurant was one of those small shop front restaurants in Swanston Street. The cans of drink were $2.50. We had table service and the staff were pleasant. This isn't fine dining but it is quite acceptable.

It made me think about Noodle Box in Doncaster East and the Thai restaurants I order takeaway food from in Templestowe. I received two large prawns in the Nasi seafood, an excellent tasting dish at a sit down restaurant for $9.90. With Noodle Box in Doncaster East if I order the Nasi seafood, I'm actually lucky to get a prawn at all (I have complained in the past, but now given up) and the Nasi without the prawns is around $13. A local Massaman curry takeaway is likely to cost around $14.

I remember one local businessman saying he charged local customers more because he was convenient for them and paid his staff less because they didn't have to travel as far. It feels to me like local businesses in the suburbs are overcharging because they can. I'm all for supporting local businesses but if they aren't providing as a good as value as you can get elsewhere it does make you question their business model. A sit down restaurant in the city charging much less than a quick takeaway in the suburbs simply doesn't make sense.
